Typhoid fever

Patient’s Problem

A 27-year-old male, Mr.Kartik (name changed to protect identity), presented with a 10-day history of persistent high-grade fever. He also experienced headaches, stomach discomfort, and generalized weakness. He lives in a crowded urban area with poor sanitation and a history of consuming unboiled tap water.

 

Diagnosis

The consulting doctor, one of the best MD physicians in Vadodara, suspected typhoid fever and performed a physical exam and lab tests.

Findings included:
  • Positive Blood Culture: The test confirmed the presence of Salmonella Typhi.
  • Widal Test: This test also came back positive, supporting the diagnosis.
  • A physical exam showed faint rose spots on his abdomen and an enlarged liver and spleen.

 

Treatment

Based on the diagnosis, a treatment plan was initiated:

  • Antibiotics: The patient was given Ceftriaxone intravenously to treat the infection.
  • Supportive Care: He was given fluids for rehydration and Paracetamol to control the fever and pain, which is consistent with standard cold and fever treatment in Vadodara
  • Monitoring: The patient was closely monitored for any complications.

 

Result

With timely treatment, Mr. X’s fever went away on the sixth day. He made a full recovery without any complications and was discharged after 14 days. He was advised on hygiene and sanitation to prevent future infections.
