Hypertension

Patient’s Problem

A 50-year-old male, Mr. Suresh (name changed to protect identity), a bank employee, presented with a two-week history of headaches that were worse in the mornings. He also complained of occasional dizziness and fatigue. He had a family history of hypertension, and his lifestyle included smoking and a diet high in salt. He visited the best MD physician in Vadodara.

Diagnosis

Based on his symptoms and risk factors, a diagnosis of Stage 2 Essential Hypertension was made.

Findings included:

  • Blood Pressure: His blood pressure was significantly high at 162/96 mmHg on two separate measurements.
  • Physical Exam: A physical exam showed no other major issues, but a fundoscopy revealed mild narrowing of blood vessels in his eyes, a sign of high blood pressure.
  • Lab Tests: His lipid profile showed high cholesterol, adding another risk factor for heart disease.

Treatment

The treatment plan focused on both lifestyle changes and medication.

  • Lifestyle Modifications: He was advised to reduce his salt intake, exercise daily, and quit smoking.
  • Medication: He was started on Amlodipine to lower his blood pressure and a statin to manage his high cholesterol.
  • Monitoring: Regular blood pressure checks were scheduled to monitor his progress.

Result

The prognosis is good, provided he follows the treatment plan. If he is compliant with his medication and lifestyle changes, his blood pressure should improve, significantly reducing his risk of a stroke, heart attack, or kidney disease.
